Many bugs that normally live outdoors will occasionally come indoors for shelter. This is especially common as fall and winter approach. These insects are often referred to as “occasional invaders.”
Occasional invaders can be real pests. They do not want to live in our homes, but once they wander inside they will become a nuisance. These pests may be found inside, but do not complete their entire life cycle in the structure.
While occasional invaders are normally not damaging pests, lawn pests can cause serious damage to turfgrass. They can be divided into soil inhabitants, such as mole crickets and grubs; and thatch inhabitants, such as armyworms and sod webworms.
Both occasional invaders and lawn pests have certain times of the year where they are more prevalent. For instance, spring time normally brings chinch bug activity to turf areas. Aphids, whitefly, and caterpillars are common on ornamentals at this time of year as well.

Earwigs, silverfish, sowbugs, pillbugs, and millipedes are most commonly found in the middle of summer when the temperatures are the warmest and rainfall and humidity is high. These critters can be found entering your home and lying in dark, damp places.
The fall season brings pests such as sod webworms, grubworms, and armyworms. Grubworms feed on the roots of grass, whereas sod webworms and armyworms feed on the blades. They can cause extreme damage to lawns if not properly treated.
During winter mites and scale are common. Scale will devour ornamental plants and secrete honeydew that attracts ants. Psocids and millipedes are also usually seen at this time of year and may be found in homes.
